Nothing can be taken for granted in this game, although it pits 2 sides that are nominally 2 divisions apart.

Southampton are good enough to challenge many Championship sides, but I don’t think Pompey are one of them. I –of course- refer to Pompey as a Championship side because I believe it’s a mere formality that they should play the rest of their season in EPL. They’re going to be relegated and deservedly so.

Still, the odds appear to be massive on the away win. It’s not like Southampton are unbeaten at home or anything like that. They are 7-4-2 at home in League One, and this being a derby it becomes obvious that the visitors will not field a weakened side either.

The Saints are without a few of their regulars. 3 are on the injury list and 2 are ineligible, so it adds up.

Pompey also will be without the cup-tied O’Hara, while Boateng is a major doubt.

Now Southampton would have won my vote had they been on a better position in the league (i.e. not having been deducted 10 points). Right now I see Alan Pardew still has a mountain to climb in a bid to finish in the top 6, and I think Pompey are the more relaxed side here as they already know their fate.

It’s not so often that I will back Pompey to win, but at 2.63 for a Premiership side to beat a League One side who wouldn’t?
